Don A. Heard, EdD, MBA is the AHEC Fort Smith Director and Practice Management Instructor and is a native of Greenwood, Arkansas. He received a BSBA degree in Accounting and Finance in 1973 from The University of Arkansas, MBA in 1985 and Doctor Degree in Higher Education Administration in 1994 also from the University of Arkansas. Don joined AHEC in 1986.He is an adjunct faculty with John Brown University and was elected to Alpha Sigma Lambda in 2002 for excellence in teaching. Don is a graduate of Leadership Fort Smith, and serves on numerous Community Boards and Committees. |

Lawrence C. Price, MD, is the Coordinator of Medicine Rotations. Dr. Price is a native of McAlester, Oklahoma, and a graduate of Northeastern State College in Tahlequah. He received his MD degree from Washington University School of Medicine in 1963, and completed his internal medicine residency at St. Luke’s Hospital. He then served in Vietnam for two years before entering private practice in Fort Smith. He became director of the internal medicine portion of the residency in 1980, and was interim residency director in 1986. He and his wife, Ruth Anne, have three children and enjoy their grandchildren in their free time. Dr. Price also enjoys golf and yard work. |

Jimmy D. Acklin, MD, is the Residency Director, and a native Arkansan from Conway. He received a BS in Zoology from the University of Arkansas in 1979, and his MD degree from UAMS in 1983. His residency was with AHEC-Fort Smith, and he joined the staff of the program on completion of the residency in 1986. In 1997, he assumed the Residency Director position. Jimmy has a special medical interest in AIDS/HIV care, obstetrics, and procedural training. When not at the office, he can be found on his farm raising beefalo and horses. |

Richard Aclin, MD, is the Director of Pediatric Education. Dr. Aclin attended Hendrix College and the University of Arkansas School of Medicine. He completed his pediatric training at UAMS, and is board certified and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Aclin served six years active duty in the USAF where he was chief of outpatient pediatrics and the nursery at Kessler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, as well as a Consultant to the Surgeon General of the Air Force. After his discharge from the Air Force, he came to Fort Smith, and has been in private practice since 1971. He and his wife, Kay, have four children and eight grandchildren. Dr. Aclin’s spare time is spread between golf, tennis, and hunting. |

Bryan Clardy, MD, received his bachelors degree in biology and chemistry in 1995 from Southwestern University. He went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 1999. He completed residency in Family Medicine in 2002. He has special interests in wilderness medicine and Obstetrics. |

Charles Parker, MD, graduated with honors from the University of Arkansas School of Medical Sciences in 1985, and was also inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Society. He spent ten years as an emergency room physician at Sparks. He was in private practice in Booneville prior to his ER work. He and his wife Jackye live on the outskirts of Bonanza and have a shooting range and well stocked ponds for the children of the residents to fish in. |

Elisa Payne, MD graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in Zoology in 1991. She then received her MD at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1997 and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha society the same year. She completed her residency training in Family Medicine in 2000. Her special interests in medicine include Adult Medicine. She spends her spare time in various pursuits including hiking, cooking and creative writing. |

Timothy L. Spradlin, MD received a B.S. in Microbiology from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. He then earned his MD at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1997 and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha society the same year. He completed a Family Medicine residency in 2000. His special interests in medicine include Pediatrics, Surgical Obstetrics and GI endoscopy. His interests outside of medicine include mountaineering, climbing and scuba diving. |

Katherine Irish-Clardy, M.D. grew up in Costa Rica. She came to the United States for her last year of high school and subsequently earned her undergraduate degree from Russell Sage College in Troy, New York. She returned to Costa Rica after college and obtained her medical degree from the University of Costa Rica Medical School. She completed her year of required Social Service as a General Practitioner working at a rural Health Department in Costa Rica. Subsequently she moved to Arkansas where she completed her residency in Family Medicine at AHEC Fort Smith in 2001. She worked for four years at La Clinica Del Pueblo in Fort Smith, serving the Hispanic population in Fort Smith and the surrounding area. During that time she was part-time faculty at AHEC Fort Smith. In 2005, she joined the faculty full-time. She continues to see many of her patients from La Clinica as well as having a busy obstetrical practice along with her duties as faculty. She and her husband, Dr. Bryan Clardy, met during residency and have two children, Kenneth and Erin. |

David King, MD is a native Oklahoman and received a BA in Political Science from Bethany Nazarene College. After serving in the Peace Corps and living and working around the world for six years, he obtained his MD from the University of Oklahoma in 1996. This same year he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He completed his residency at AHEC Fort Smith in 1999. After completing his residency, he spent time as an air force physician and in private practice. Dr. King returned to AHEC Fort Smith as a faculty member in July 2007. Dr King as his wife Virginia have four children. His outside interest include fly fishing, OU football and politics. |

Matthew Steed, MD is a medical graduate of UAMS. He transferred to AHEC Fort Smith Residency Program from Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. During Dr. Steed's last year of residency, he served as Chief Resident. After completing his family medicine residency, he was chosen as AHEC Fort Smith's first OB Fellow. Dr. Steed joined AHEC Fort Smith faculty on July 1, 2008. In his spare time he enjoys riding his motorcycle and participating in outdoor sports. |

Nicole M. Scally, MD graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of New Mexico with a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry in 1999. She completed her MD training at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in 2005. She completed the Rural Track of the University of New Mexico Family Medicine Residency Program, which is based out of Santa Fe, NM in 2008. She joined the faculty at AHEC Fort Smith in May of 2009 as an Obstetrics Fellow. She speaks fluent Spanish. She has two daughters, Hailey (3 years old) and Alex (8 months old). In her not-so-ample spare time, she is a 17 year veteran ice hockey player, she loves to surf, travel to Costa Rica, and eat as much New Mexico green chile as she can get her hands on. |

B.J. Landis, PhD, APN earned a BSN degree from the University of Mississippi, received her Nurse Practitioner training and a MSN degree in Community Health Nursing from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, and a PhD degree in nursing from the University of Texas at Austin. She has been a certified Family Nurse Practitioner since 1982. Dr Landis has held faculty position at Mississippi University for Women and the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing, and currently holds an appointment as an Associate Professor in the UAMS College of Nursing and Assistant Clinical Professor in the UAMS College of Medicine. Dr Landis was recognized as Advanced Practice Nurse of the Year 2000 by the Arkansas State Nurses Association. She has published articles, authored book chapters, and presented papers at national and international professional meetings. She is retired from the U.S. Army and maintains a forensic nursing practice. |

Elizabeth Petray, LCSW is a clinical social worker on our faculty. She graduated from Hendrix College in Conway with a bachelor degree in Psychology. She then attended UA-Little Rock where she completed her MSW degree in 1993. She assesses all of our obstetrical patients for social stress and provides counseling to our general patient population upon referral by resident or faculty physicians. She also assists low-income patients in receiving medications from pharmaceutical companies. She also coordinates and is involved in bi-annual education planning sessions (EPS) on all residents. Mrs. Petray serves on the Tri-county Tobacco Free Coalition and the River Valley Tobacco Free Coalition. She joined AHECFS in 1995. She is married and has two sons. |

John A. Vinson, PharmD, is the Clinical Pharmacy Director. He also serves as an Assistant Professor at the UAMS College of Pharmacy in the Pharmacy Practice department. Dr. Vinson is a native of Van Buren, Arkansas and a graduate of Van Buren high school in 1993. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at the University of Arkansas in 1997. He earned his PharmD in 2004 from the UAMS College of Pharmacy. He graduated with high honors and was awarded the faculty gold key. Dr. Vinson and his wife Sarah have a son and a daughter. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, spending time with family, and cheering on the Razorbacks.
